2020 Interiors Trend Edit

You’ve survived dry January, frugal January, what felt like a 73 day month January and now with the first 2020 pay cheque under your belt, it’s burning a hole in your pocket. If you’re looking to update your home interiors for Spring and the year ahead, then read on for our edit of the latest interior design trends.

Our homes are constantly changing and evolving (just like our wardrobes) little tweaks here and there to update for the new season or a major revamp to reflect new family additions or perhaps a change of work environment. Whatever your home interior requirements are for 2020 then these are the key aesthetics you need to know about. A lot of them are evolutions of existing trends with the addition of a fresh colour palette or new textures, so depending on your existing decor, a few simple tweaks may be all it takes to get your home bang up to date.

Into the blue

As design is our passion, we obviously like to keep on top of the latest trends, especially when it comes to colour, but unless you’ve been under a rock you’ll also probably be aware of Pantone’s colour of the year “Classic blue”. It’s safe to say there will be lots of homes shifting their wall colour of choice to an uplifting blue hue. A simple change of colour can make a significant and cost effective room update. Not handy with a brush? Why not add blue touches with the addition of new soft furnishings, accessories or wall art.

Abstract

With inspiration drawn from abstract or expressionist art, this trend encompasses geometric pattern, freeform line drawings and colour blocking. The abstract trend allows for a playful approach to interior decor with the addition of bold pattern (think wallpaper, cushions or bed linen) to add splashes of colour to an existing neutral decor.  Another way to accessorise the trend is with wall art, why not add a simplistic line drawing to an otherwise bold decor or conversely add bold geometric art to a more pared back neutral aesthetic.

Pared back simplicity

An evolution of the Nordic trend which we wrote about in our previous trend blog, this look is all about creating a sense of calm and tranquility. Could it be time to say goodbye to fifty shades of grey and look to warmer, neutral shades like oatmeal and also Dulux colour of the year ‘Tranquil Dawn’, a soft and calming green. Sustainability plays a key role in this trend and throughout interiors in general, with a more considered choice of natural materials or playing with textures. This trend looks particularly great when incorporating a dark accent colour, through contrasting accessories or details such as frames, lamps and occasional tables.

This trend will appeal to to those who like their style simple and understated but with the usual home comforts. Add interest to a neutral decor with tactile pieces such as jute rugs, faux fur or add bold monochromatic or complementary toned wall art to create focal points in the room.

Home comforts

Colour isn’t the only player in the trend game, texture is up there too. Similarly to pared back simplicity, a great way to update a neutral room is to layer different textures in complementary colours. Think cool blues, greens, greys and pinks and add rugs, cushions, faux furs and other textiles in a variety of materials to add interest and depth. Velvet sofa’s have had an enormous resurgence over the last year and are the perfect example of the home comfort trend. The current preoccupation with nature means adding plants and dried flowers is another way to add texture, as well as bringing myriad other benefits in the home. Go to the Max

As always to contrast the more subtle trends, we have a bold and flamboyant addition to the 2020 interiors trends scene. For those who want to stick two fingers up to Scandi design, take things to the max with contrasting pattern, colour and texture. This can be a tricky statement look to execute but imagine if Art Deco and Mid Century style had a baby. Scalloped edges, curvaceous furniture, metallics, marble and geometrics, all have a place here. Think rich jewel tones to add glamour and perhaps add a few nudes into the mix for good measure. Complementary artwork comes from opposite ends of the spectrum, think bold, bright hues or neutral minimal nudes.
